There are many like Clickbank and Commission Junction, but Clickbank is the easiest to start with (can be set up in 5 minutes) and is extremely popular. Make sure that the vendor that is selling the product through Clickbank is affiliate friendly and provides great support.

Make sure that the product they are selling is popular and sold by other affiliates. This sounds counter intuitive but it is vital that you select products that are already popular. Why? Because they are proven to make money.

  • Domains

– When selling someone’s product you have a choice of directly linking to their sales page or using your own domain and then redirecting. Direct linking is useful for testing but will not be as profitable unless you use your own domain. Search engines like Google, Bing etc prefer you to have your own domain and web site which then links to the vendor’s sales page.

  • Choosing keywords

– Search engines work by taking the keywords that you type in and presenting a list of PPC adverts. The order of which these are presented to you depends on how relevant they are  (to the keywords), their quality (and the quality of the web site that they are being linked to), and finally the bid price for the keyword.

So in selecting your keywords you must make them relevant to your web site where you are selling your product. The most popular keywords are the most expensive to bid on. So, aim for the longer keywords/phrases that are available (called ‘long tail’) which are more specialist.

  • Organising keywords

– Once you have your list of keywords (start with 1000 to begin with although this will depend upon your daily budget). You need to organise your keywords into adgroups which are related. For example keywords that contain similar words can be grouped together into adgroups etc.

This is important because it helps you make changes when you are managing your campaign. This is the secret of optimising everything to make it more profitable. Use Microsoft Excel to organise everything. Its a fabulous tool that will make your work a lot easier.

  • Ads

– Once you have your AdWords you need to create your ads. PPC ads need to be short, sweet and direct. They consist of a headline, descriptions (2 lines), display link (a visual link to a site) and the actual link to the site. So how do you write these ads? Some tips include, placing keywords in the ad, using emotional language, defining a feature and benefit or a call to action.

One very important point; you must check the guidelines published by the search engine on what you can and cannot do in an ad. If you mess up you will be punished! So be warned.

  • Use AdWords Editor

– At this stage you have your list of organised keywords and ads. Now you have to get these into your account provided by the search engine. You need to create an account and in this example we will assume you are using Google AdWords. So create the account and explore.

Now you could enter your campaign one keyword at a time and probably make a lot of mistakes along the way. Fortunately there is another way by using the Google AdWords editor. Download this to your machine and launch it. There are many benefits to this tool including:

  • You can use it offline to build your campaigns and then synchronise with your AdWords account.
  • You can copy and paste from Excel all of your keywords, ads etc straight into the tool
  • With active campaigns you can download the latest data and make bulk changes which simply are not possible any other way.

So download it, and use it.

  • Landing Pages

– We have already stated that having your own domain is crucial to long term success. When a prospect clicks on the PPC advert they will be sent to your web site and your landing page. This page is crucial, as a prospect will look at it and probably choose within 5 – 10 seconds whether they are going to stay on the page. So the look and feel of this page is crucial. You have to grab their attention and keep it.

The colour of the text, fonts, headlines, use of video, pictures etc is a very exact science which you need to understand. It is important that you study the art of copywriting which is the art of writing sales copy. This is so important that if you don’t master it, then everything else is irrelevant.

  • Initial Bids

– Ok, so now you are ready to go. What price to you start bidding on your keywords. This is always difficult, and will depend upon many factors. You need to conduct some research, find out how much other sellers are bidding for on these same keywords. There are plenty of tools out there than can help you do this. If you don’t want to research then start of with a bid that is roughly equivalent to 0.01  times (or 100th) the amount of money that you will earn from each sale.

  • Optimising

– Now your adverts are running and you are getting feedback from the search engine. At regular intervals your Google AdWords account will update you with statistical information about your campaign, which can be synchronised back to the AdWords editor and viewed offline.

Here you will see the best performing ads, keywords and adgroups. You should wait a few days before making any changes because they have to be statistically significant. then start increasing or decreasing the bids on keywords depending on their performance. This is important to increase profitability and there are many strategies that can be applied to help you achieve this.

  • Running Your Campaigns

– PPC advertising is an extremely lucrative business with millions of people making millions every year. Those that are successful are persistent, work hard, learn from the best teachers, and are patient with their results. The only way to know if a campaign will work is to test it, optimise it and then scale it up. You need to try multiple campaigns and keep the momentum going before you will achieve success.
